Policies in Parliament

Housing Update

Sadly, the Liberal Government’s controversial “Homes Authority” legislation passed the Parliament. This means that the management of Tasmania’s social housing system will be handballed out of direct government control to be managed by an arms’ length statutory body instead (a bit like the Macquarie Point Development Cooperation – which has been an absolute disaster).

I’ve repeatedly called this out as a terrible move that absolves this government of their direct responsibility over Tasmania’s worsening housing crisis. Meanwhile, 4,504 applicants languish on the housing register, with wait times for priority applicants exceeding 71.6 weeks.

You can watch a quick video of me talking in the Parliament about why this legislation is a terrible idea here.
