David O'Byrne was elected to the Tasmanian Parliament as a Labor Member for the electorate of Franklin at the 2010 State election. His portfolio responsibilities currently encompass Workplace Relations, Police and Emergency Management, Economic Development, Infrastructure and Innovation Science and Technology.

David O'Byrne's passion for social justice initially led him into the union movement.  In 1993 David joined the Health and Community Service Union, and then in 1994 he joined the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union (LHMU-now United Voice).

David was elected as State Secretary of the LHMU in 2001 and was re-elected unopposed in 2002 and 2006.  He also served as National Vice President of the union between 2008 & 2010.

David also served as State President of the ALP Tasmanian Branch from 2004-2006 and Senior Vice President of Unions Tasmania between 2001 and 2009.
