Bills I have introduced into the Parliament

Minimum rental standards - mandatory window coverings for social housing properties

Successfully passed Parliament and became law in November 2023

Tragically, families and individuals in need of social housing were often housed in properties without any sort of blinds, curtains and window coverings at all.

If they wanted the privacy and warmth they deserve, their housing provider would tell that they’ll need to buy and install their own curtains or blinds – which many social housing tenants simply couldn’t afford to do.

My Bill requires social housing providers to install blinds and curtains in properties as soon as practicable after the commencement of each new tenancy agreement.

This brings social housing tenants in line with the protections that currently exist for tenants in the private market within the Residential Tenancy Act.

Renters don’t deserve to be treated any differently just because they’re in social housing.

Protecting people and their pets from family violence

Successfully passed Parliament and became law in December 2024

Harming animals with the intent to control, frighten or intimidate a spouse or partner is now explicitly recognised as a form of family violence in Tasmania.

Animals aren’t just objects or property. To many people, they are dearly loved pets and can be support animals during times of crisis. Tragically, the bond people form with animals can be exploited by family violence perpetrators.

This Bill brought Tasmania in line with every other jurisdiction in the country through an amendment to the Family Violence Act 2004.
